Glasgow, March 2014. Mr Anthony Bailey OBE was bestowed Freedom of the City of Glasgow at a ceremony held in The Trade’s Hall of Glasgow, Scotland. Mr Bailey also became a Burgess of Glasgow and a member of the Incorporation of Wrights. The ceremony was proceeded by a tour of the building organised by Deacon Dr John A Smail.

The Freedom of the City of Glasgow is a tribute of respect that is in the power of the City to offer any person and is conferred by the Lord Provost of Glasgow. The Freedom of the City, as bestowed on Sir Samuel Curran, Nelson Mandela, Benno Schotz, Jim Watt, Nelson Mandela, Harry McShane, Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish, The Very Rev George Fielden MacLeod, Sir Alex Ferguson, Rt Hon The Lord MacFarlane, Aung San Suu Kyi and Billy Connolly, is awarded by the council to “persons of distinction or persons who have rendered eminent service to the City”.

The Wrights, originally “Workers in Wood”, is reputedly the oldest Guild in the UK having been given its Charter in 1057 by King Malcolm III.
